Sombody’s Watching Me

Do you remember the hit single from the mid-eighties I always feel like, somebody’s watching me?

I snapped several photos on a recent hike, and the song’s lyrics came to mind.  I watched the video, and promptly developed an ‘earworm.’  Since the tune is rattling around in my head today, I thought I would share Rockwell’s lyrics with my photos from the trail.

spider hole

Who’s watching?
Tell me who’s watching.
Who’s watching me?

orange rock

I’m just an average man, with an average life.
I work from nine to five; hey hell, I pay the price.
All I want is to be left alone in my average home;
But why do I always feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone, and

I always feel like somebody’s watching me.
And I have no privacy.
fairy house in the woods
Woh, I always feel like somebody’s watching me.
Tell me is it just a dream?

When I come home at night.
I bolt the door real tight.
People call me on the phone I’m trying to avoid.
Well, can the people on T.V. see me.
Or am I just paranoid?

missing tree roots

When I’m in the shower.
I’m afraid to wash my hair.
‘Cause I might open my eyes
And find someone standing there.
People say I’m crazy.
Just a little touched.
But maybe showers remind me of
“Psycho” too much.
That’s why. . .

I always feel like somebody’s watching me.
And I have no privacy.
Woh, I always feel like somebody’s watching me.
Who’s playing tricks on me?

spider web

Who’s watching me?
I don’t know anymore . . . are the neighbors watching
Who’s watching?
Well, it’s the mailman watching me: and I don’t feel safe anymore.
Tell me who’s watching.
Oh, what a mess. I wonder who’s watching me now,
(WHO?) the I.R.S.?

I always feel like somebody’s watching me.
And I have no privacy.
Woh, I always feel like somebody’s watching me.
Who’s playing tricks on me?

I always feel like somebody’s watching me.
I always feel like somebody’s watching me.
I always feel like somebody’s watching me.
I always feel like somebody’s watching me.
I always feel like somebody’s watching me.

I always feel like somebody’s watching me.
And I have no privacy.
Woh, I always feel like somebody’s watching me.
I can’t enjoy my tea.

I always feel like somebody’s watching me.
I want my privacy.
Woh, I always feel like somebody’s watching me.
Woh, I always feel like somebody’s watching me.
Stop playing tricks on me

    • If you hoover over the word ‘earworm’ in the piece it will take you to a link explaining the phenomenon.

As for that spider, I didn’t see it till I enlarged the photo. I’m curious but not crazy…that baby has some long, long legs.

  1. There I was strolling along with you on your walk – wondering if the drought is responsible for any of the holes or what kind of wild life might be making them or taking advantage of them. I was thinking cute little bunnies and squirrels and maybe a mole type creature [do you have them?] And then ……..yikes and gads and any other Boomdee-ish expletive I can think of!
    It’s a freaking SPIDER!!

I have never heard that song before and now it will be forever linked with a big black hairy tarantula type spider emerging from a hole in the ground …… I’m glad it wasn’t a movie!!

    • To ease your nerves, the spider is about the size of my thumbnail. I was more worried about rattlesnakes, since the temps are hot and the trails are dry. I just saw a reminder about them today.

The ‘clearing’ under the tree always fascinates me since it’s so large. We have mountain lions in the area, but this is far too close to the trail to be of interest to them, and to close to the ground to house bats. Lots of mysteries on that trail.

We do have all of the above on that trail: squirrels, bunnies and I think moles though I’ve not seen on there. If you go further up the trail, you can also spot wild hogs and of course deer.

      • When I go on walks in the bush I tend to look up, because there are no wild animals [or snakes] just birds. There are spiders though, including ground dwellers and big huhu bugs that live in dead wood. They look fearsome but are harmless. Such different scenes and wildlife! We do have [introduced] wild boar and deer and goats and rabbits. But they tend to be in the high country which is pretty inaccessible to most but the intrepid chaps who ‘go hunting’.

          • Yes, that was really interesting – and that is pretty much how it is here too. Both native flora and fauna suffer badly when new animals are introduced – no natural immunity at all! With such a large population of flightless birds they were decimated when rats, ferrets and cats began escaping the sailing ships of early European visitors. The settlers brought with them seemingly harmless things such as gorse, to create the farm pasture boundaries that were used extensively throughout England. In these different climatic conditions and with such rich soil to grow in the gorse took off and began to cover any land that was being felled of native rain forest for farming. For many years this country was sulphur yellow every Autumn with acres and acres of wild gorse.

I wonder if things would be any different if mankind found new lands to ‘conquer’. Would we still think we could bend nature to our will or would we have learned to tread with a tad more respect? I do hope it would be the latter!!

    • Sweet cheeses Pauline!! I didn’t even see that hairy beast in the tunnel! Now that I’ve biggy-fied the photo, I’ll need therapy, LOL. I’d be burning rubber out of there so fast, there’d be aqua smoke coming from my sneakers…….shiver!!!!!! Oh and I’d be screaming like a little girl too. The first time through, I thought the hole was just in the creepy web up front.

  2. Holy crackers the ’80’s were cheesy!! LOL, does that guy own a shirt and why does he keep taking showers? HA! I didn’t remember the song by the title but then it started and my brain went through a time warp. Maybe I was wearing high waist jeans and my oversize t-shirt was slouching off one shoulder and my hair was permed (Scream!!! frightening). A lot of ’80’s music sounds like the theme to the Ghost Busters. I guess it has been 25 years or so, but wow, did you see the television set? It was like the dark ages when you see these old video’s. Oh-oooooo no, WE’RE vintage Alys 😀

I’m fascinated by all these photo’s. I can’t imagine what’s living in that cave under the tree roots. Looks like a fabulous place for a Gnome Home. I like how the wee critter of home number one lined the doorway with some soft fleece of shorts. Looks very cozy. The spiderweb (I think it is?) looks like a vortex of bugs I would not want to tangle with. Do you have gophers in California? When we first bought the house I grew up in, there was a giant field across the street. It was basically swamps and tall grass. We’d always see gophers there and sometimes in our yard. They’re so darn cute 😀 Good eye to spot all these little homes on your hike Alys! Amazing what you find in the middle of a city. xoK

    • They were cheesy! That video makes no sense to me at all, either, and I lived during that time. I do like the song though in a catchy sort of way.

We’re vintage? That sounds so much better than the alternative, doesn’t it?

We do have gophers here, thought not in our immediate neighborhood. I used to see them when I would walk on my break at work when we were out by the airport. So cute watching them pop up out of their holes.
