Today I surpassed a personal milestone. A year ago February, I set out to write every day for a year. During that time, the earth made a complete revolution around the sun. Four seasons came and went. Garden squirrels came and went too, along with aphids, scale and thrips. Raccoons dropped by, leaving tell-tale paw prints next to the overturned sod before washing there ‘hands’ in the fountain. It’s every critter for themselves in the world of gardeningnirvana.
Writing daily was sometimes challenging, but it was always worthwhile. I gained confidence along the way. Dr. Seuss said it best:
“Oh the places you’ll go! There is fun to be done! There are points to be scored. There are games to be won. And the magical things you can do with that ‘blog’ will make you the winning-est winner of all.”
The good doctor was right. Here’s what I won:
- The ability to persevere through illness, fatigue and, yes, procrastination.
- Discipline, in both writing and gardening.
- Goal-setting. It had been awhile since I set such a lofty goal. It was important to me to see it through.
- The most generous, thoughtful, gracious, intelligent and engaged readers a person could hope for. (You know who you are)
*With apologies to Dr. Seuss
Good for you! I’m impressed – you inspire me to do the same. Keep up the good work……

You could set a different goal, say once a week. Or twice a week. Whatever feels right. When I blogged now and then, I found that it often fell to the bottom of the list. Putting it front and center for a year taught me so much more than if I had kept the occasional pace. I enjoy the writing, the photo sharing and the amazing community I’ve found.
Only you know what’s best.

I moved to Ottawa about 18 years ago, so I’ve been away a long time…. I’m just shy of 8 years younger. I remember going to their house when I was young and looking up to her… And thinking how awesome she was! I think though, that it’s really been since i’ve been so far away, that I’ve realized and appreciated how important my family connections really are. And I think A big part was when I lost my dad, and then her dad shortly after. And it’s funny how our creativity has been a part of both of us, but I never realized how similar we were until recently! I think I see what side of the family it comes from! She is just as genuine, sincere and lovely, as you imagine her to be. I can’t wait to hear the stories that unfold from your meeting! 🙂

It is so true about life, isn’t it, that we often appreciate things more once they’re gone…or at least not under our nose. I think age improves that, too. It puts a lot of life into perspective, because we have years and experiences to compare.
I am so looking forward to finally meeting her in person and to sharing time together. I know it will go so fast. I plan to make every minute count.

I didn’t know it was a goal but I did notice you were being very disciplined with it. Good for you! I did that for at least a year but can’t anymore… but the SEO doesn’t go away. And that and the community keeps growing if you keep up with it even if it isn’t quite the same volume.

Thank you, Sheryl. I love the community and since I blog for the joy of it, and not as a business enterprise, it takes the pressure off of SEO.

Simply outstanding my dear, congratulations on reaching your goal. I have seen how you set your sights on so many things and go for it. I really admire that about you. I’m such a big fan of Dr Seuss too. Whenever I read something attributed to him, I want to say “true that” and a giant light bulb goes off. One of my favourite Seuss’isms is “Today was good, today was fun, tomorrow is another one”. I look forward to more awesomeness here and of course time with you soon. xo Lots of Love K

Thank you so much! This blogging world is amazing, isn’t it. The act of blogging has me disciplined in other ways as well. Do you find that to be true, too?
Yes, Dr. Seuss is brilliant. When I was a girl of about 8 or 9, I used to volunteer in the library at lunch. I still remember putting away so many of his books, stopping to read parts or all of each one.
I like the quote you gave as well, but I don’t know what it’s from. I should make a point of re-reading all of his books one day.
Love to you too.
