Here’s what’s happening in the garden:
As the pale pink cosmos wind down, this bright pink beauty emerged nearby. Could it be the start of a whole new crop?
Our tall clay pot is a Hodge-podge of color. A few seeds, a few cell packs and a volunteer or two add up to Snapdragons, Vinca, California Poppies, Begonia, and a couple of Birdhouse Gourds.
This pumpkin is literally hanging by a thread (see insert). It measures 35 inches in circumference, about 11 inches across.
One of the few surviving pumpkin transplants. Its funny shape reminds me of a large acorn. What do you think?
The darling of the pumpkin patch. It measures 52 inches in circumference, about 17 inches across.
This ill-fated pumpkin sprout has lost its way. It’s growing in the middle of the lawn, no doubt planted there by a squirrel.
I’m hiding indoors from the hot afternoon sun, but will check on the emerging Lacewings at dusk.

Gardening Nirvana 
It’s all looking fantastic Alys! It is such an interesting garden and your pumpkins are something to be proud of. Yes, that is a mighty acorn of a pumpkin! We have random sunflower shoots here and there from the birdseed. It’s always fun to see what pops up as a surprise. Lawn pumpkins for you! I’m off to bed now, 10.30pm, an early night. That’s a very clever photo layout, love it. I can’t wait to see how big that pumpkin actually gets. I can almost imagine that little squirrel with seed in hand doing his own version of gardening, I hope he gets a BIG one, HA. Stay cool!

Thank you, Boomdee. That is a funny image of a squirrel planting his stash. I would love to strap a webcam to the back of a squirrel so I could follow the activity for a day. Wouldn’t that be entertaining?

I love it when the wildlife helps with the gardening… I found a little sunflower seedling that must have been planted by the birds and it’s fabulous! I’m so pleased that I left it 🙂 Great pumpkins – I wanted t grow some this year but decided to limit myself for the first year as I usually take too much on and then regret it!

I can certainly relate to that! They also say alternating crops from year to year is a good idea anyway, so perhaps next year will be a good time to plant some.
I’m glad you have an emerging sunflower. It was the same with my cosmos. I didn’t know what they were so left them to grow. Now they are the darling of the garden. Fun!
