Though I continue to fuss with the yellow room, the final pieces are in place. When my older son moved out, I redecorated, with the goal of creating an eclectic and relaxing guest room. You can read more about that in my post Decorating the Yellow Room.

The small desk I ordered for the room fits in style and size beautifully. I store gift bags and ribbons in this room, so the desk is a handy place to stage gifts.

If you’re a regular reader, you may remember that the lovely Ficus met its fate, a short-lived and expensive mistake. I moved it to a brighter location to no avail. It’s now part of the composting pile.
In its place, I moved the postage stamp table I created with my Dad’s collection and bought an affordable plant that gets by with low light to sit on top.

Peace Lilies prefer moderate to low light, and who doesn’t like a plant with the word “peace” in its name? The plant can have “mild toxicity” to cats if ingested which I read today, but neither of our kitties show any interest in our houseplants, preferring instead to roll in or imbibe the plentiful garden nepeta known as catnip.

Two more small additions include a pair of green shams for the bed and the embroidery hoop art I made for the garden bench. A couple of readers shared concerns about the longevity of the pieces if I hung them outdoors, so they now reside above the bed.

This project has been a lot of fun. Now I’m a woman in search of another empty room. Any takers?
What projects are you up to?
What a lovely guest room, Alys. I wouldn’t want to leave! (I spy a kitty tail in the first photo. π» An extra bonus for cat-loving guests. π)
Wish you lived closer… I could use a helping hand, I’m pretty poor at interior decorating!

Thank you, Eliza. It would be so nice to have you come for a visit. I just noticed Bubba’s tail when I posted. He follows me everywhere.

We would have fun together, Laurie. I wish I could step through a portal for an afternoon. :-)
I hope you’re coping with the crazy rain you’re being inundated with throughout New England. It is all too much.
Thank you for your nice words.

Oh, same!!!!
As for the rain, central Maine seems to have escaped the worst of it even though we are very, very soggy. No floods, unlike western Massachusetts and Vermont. Holy cats! I have read that in Vermont, this is the worst flooding in recent history.

I’m glad you are in the clear as far as flooding is concerned, Laurie. I’ve seen the shocking footage of Vermont flooding. It’s hard to wrap one’s head around that damage.

Terrible! We are lucky to have escaped the worst of it.

It’s shaping up to be a tough summer around the world.A fire started at Yosemite yesterday with zero containment so far. I dread this time of year.

Oh, gosh! Yes, I can see why you dread this time of year. Hope the fires come nowhere near you and yours.

Thank you, Laurie. We’re almost always in the clear from the fires in our suburban community, but we have friends living in the path of these fires from Santa Cruz, to Paradise and in between. We deal with the smoke and the high levels of particulate. Last year we had an unseasonal rain and it made a huge difference. I’m crossing fingers for that again this year.

In Maine, I’ll be crossing my fingers for them, too.

It looks like a growing room to me with the green on a focus wall and all the lemons everywhere not to mention the lovely Peace Lily. It has good energy in that room. Your guests will love it.

I will never rule that out. I just won’t go anywhere in this summer heat or winter snow. I never rule out anything.

I want to stay in that room! And the desk and the chair and the bed coverings are all so lovely. Yellow isn’t even a favoured colour for me, but you have made it so wonderful. I’m in the middle of planning to redecorate our bedroom. When we first moved in, I planned everything around my quilt, which is predominantly white and pale green. Leaf green curtains, pale green walls… It doesn’t work. The room faces east, the Husband needs to sleep often during the day because of shift work. So the walls will become medium warm grey with white trim, charcoal blackout curtains, and perhaps one day soon, a new quilt. The Husband hates change, so negotiating all this will be fun, but he will certainly appreciate the new darkness for daytime sleeping.

Thank you so much, Kate. It’s been many years since I’ve had the chance to decorate a room. I don’t generally use yellow either, so this was a new experience for me. I find it cheering, and the contrasting green wall is the perfect offset.
It’s interesting to note how your preferred colors didn’t work as you hoped. I’ve had similar experience with paint. It seems nice till you get it up on the walls and then ugh. Blackout drapes are a great idea. They cool things down as well on hot days. My son didn’t like change, so I understand the challenge. Sometimes easing in to it is best, our front-loading the ideas. I know you’ll make a fabulous new quilt. It’s in your genes!

I’d use the Parterre quilt, except for the bed’s usual greyhound occupant and his long nails, virtually guaranteed to shred the appliquΓ©. I’ll come up with something!

Oh you don’t want that!

Definitely not, after all that careful appliquΓ©.

The room is beautiful and filled with light! Everyone tells me that about peace lilies, yet mine sits outside the bedroom door on my small deck, more than half the day in bright sun, and it is thriving like crazy. I water it a lot, but it is so full and has blooms getting bigger and bigger, and it soaks it up and keeps growing. It’s a rebel, I think! LOL

Thank you, Susan. I love the story of your plant. Clearly it likes its current home, so stick with the plan. A rebel plant is a magical thing.

Alys! You are SO talented and adaptable! I would have been crushed if my expensive plant failed, but you found another, better idea. How lovely! I am terrible at decorating but my daughter is blessed with an eye for it, as are you! Enjoy, it is a wonderful gift and thanks, again, for sharing!
