Resurrecting Frank and Shelley

Shelley's Makeover

Shelley’s Makeover

Last August I wrote a series of posts that brought out the giggles in all of us. Pauline recently reminisced about the demise of poor Frank (I dropped him!) and his cohort, Shelley and what fun we had.

In case you missed the silliness last year, here you go:

Pauline, at The Contented Crafter suggested earlier this week that “Frank [the pumpkin] may feel a little left out” after seeing Shelley’s fashion makeover. She opined “Could you not knit him a scarf or maybe come up with a hat for your cooler nights?”

I knew Frank wasn’t long for this world, being a split pumpkin full of staples and all, so I did the next best thing: I put him on a pedestal (always good for improving ones sense of stature) and floated a festive Hydrangea for stylish panache.

Frank and Shelley

Then poor Frank ‘tossed his cookies’ while cousin Shelley looked on in horror.

Today it was every critter for themselves: houseflies, pincer bugs, squash bugs, you name it. Opportunists came and went, including something with very sharp teeth. I’m glad I missed that transaction. Soon I will don some gloves and rescue a few seeds so that Frank’s legacy lives on.

What do you suppose is beyond the dark abyss?

Frankenstein is a novel written by English author Mary Shelley about eccentric scientist Victor Frankenstein, who creates a grotesque creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was eighteen, and the novel was published when she was twenty. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. Shelley’s name appears on the second edition, published in France in 1823. Source: Wikipedia

We miss you Frank.

No-Candy Countdown:

Another day, another happy face stamp. Candy Cravings, gone.

Under-the-sea Costume Update:

We picked up a few baubles at the craft store this week and set about creating a crest for Mike’s costume. We’ve got the concept down, but the Crazy Glue refuses to stick to the rubbery chest plate. I’ve considered sewing it in place, but I’ll try my hot glue gun first. If you have any experience marrying rubber and glass, please let me know.

Pumpkins on Parade:

If I could visit a time in fashion, it would be the roaring twenties. I love the silhouettes, the bright red lips, and the dancing. My fair pumpkin below insisted on soft-focus photography for that fresh, dewy look. I was happy to oblige. Thanks for the ‘eyelashes’ Boomdee. 😉

  1. Poor Frank… but as long as he’s composted and seed collected, he can be resurrected … without all that need for tedious laboratories, bubbling test tubes and lightning rods! And this way the only pitchforks being brandished should be in the garden.

  2. Miss Glamour is quite the contrast to Frank and Shelly!! You are so creative Alys! and i am a little freaked. I was wondering how you were doing with the candy cravings…. I had a bit of a week long Oooops, but I am ok right now… Not sure what is going to happen on the 31st though. Uggg.

    • We all have oooops days. My blog and the calendar have really helped me this month. I wish I had thought of this sooner. November and December are land minds where food is concerned. I’m going to pledge moderation and see how that goes.

Thanks for your kind words. I’m having lots of fun.

  3. Ah – Alas poor Frank, we knew him well ……. He is gone, but not forgotten – he made such a mess! Did you save a seed or two? That costume is looking just a-maz-ing!! I can’t tell you how excited I am to see the final thing. I shall want a video fashion parade style you know!

Miss Pumpkin 2014 is most certainly a glamour girl of the old order, You must have such fun creating these little vignettes 🙂

    • I did save seeds from Frank, but I didn’t do a good job labeling them. They simply went into a mix of pumpkin seeds, planted, then devoured by the squash bugs. That Frank just can’t catch a break.

It has been fun creating the vignettes. I’ll probably miss it when the month is over.

Let me see what I can do on the fashion parade front. I wish we were close enough to a lake to get that photo op. Perhaps we can pose in front of our blue bedroom wall. 🙂

  4. LOL, Frank really was one hot mess. Yikes, did he get stinky in the hot sun? When I made my Babyboot bird bath I used 2 part epoxy. You mix two tubes together and when it drys it’s really stuck. I had it in the plants for the 3rd summer now and it’s still stuck. Maybe you could try that? I also wondered if you melted a spot on the costume and quickly stuck the emblem on it. Do you have a soldering iron or Creme Brûlée torch?

Such a fun pumpkin today! I’m really keen on that era too and always love your flapper girl photo’s from College. I dresses as a flapper one year and Jim was a Gangster. It was a bought costume but not expensive. So it fell apart as the night went on, LOL. The fringe came unglued. I guess you don’t get sewing for $30. Good luck with the crest hon! xox

    • Yes he was, poor old Frank. I scooped up his guts before the true decay set in. I like the early rotting pumpkin smell, but as time moves on, not so much.

Thanks for the epoxy tip. Mike bought a super duper sticky tape from the hardware store that finally worked, but I’m going to remember your tip for the next time.

Mike does have a soldering iron. That is another good idea. You have many.

Oh dear…the falling apart costume. I know them well. I payed $135 dollars for a bridesmaid dress nearly 27 years ago and it too fell apart as the night wore on. The ruffle started to come loose, I tore a whole in the skirt with my heal. You would think I was gardening instead of dancing. That would be the equivalent of a $250 dress today. Shameful what they charge for such flimsy workmanship.

You must have been an adorable flapper. Didn’t you blog about that once?

      • Oh ya, got to love those bridesmaid dresses that no one wants to wear again. That was an expensive dress for 27 years ago. I guess if you were having fun on the dance floor, it got a good workout. I think I did have a photo of the flapper and gangster costume on the blog last year, HA, so many great parties. Can you walk to your parties? I think it’d be fun to see a 5’11” (counting heals) Sea Garden Goddess floating down my street, hehe xoxox <3k

        • Those dresses are a complete ripoff. I couldn’t believe the price, and it was ugly. Pale pink satin with ruffles around in an off the shoulder look. I gave it to my sister’s friend for a Halloween costume many years ago. I’m glad it got a second life.

You say the sweetest things. Floating down the street. xoxoxo

Last night’s party was a 15 minute drive. The two parties next weekend are both walking distance so hurray for that. Love you.

          • I spied all your fantastic party photo’s earlier on FB, but must go back again. You were divine and Mike was the perfect date! I love couples costumes and you have really outdone yourself this year. I tried to look for a third item on your outfit from the Boom Room too. I saw the seeds, the glass heart charm and hmmmm, is it the ruby beads in with the seeds? Please don’t tell until I get it, (or until I give in and beg, LOL) I’m still looking xoxoxo<3
