Keeping cozy
Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot was required reading during my college days. It’s summarized as an absurdest play, with two men waiting in vain for the arrival of someone named Godot. Interpretations of the play vary widely.
I’m waiting for the gourds to turn brown. How’s that for absurd? I waited months for the birdhouse gourds to turn green. Now I’ll wait even longer for them to turn brown.
My wait isn’t political, psychological, Freudian or existential. It’s craft-based. I’m waiting for the gourds to turn brown so I can carve them into birdhouses.
I’ve bundled them up to keep them warm and dry. I give them a spin now and again to be sure they’re drying evenly. Today I wrapped them in scarves and set them on a chair where they sit mocking me. They seem determined to remain ever-green.
Waiting for Godot is “a tragicomedy in two acts.” Waiting for the gourds is just silly.

Oh, your gourds look so cozy in their little scarves, lol. I saw that play Waiting for Godot. Think it would have been even better if they were dressed up like gourds in scarves. Just sayin’…..

What pretty gourds! They are going to be beautiful homes for your feathered friends. Is that like talking to your plants to make them grow? Maybe if you swear at them? 🙂

This is a year of a lot of firsts for me in the garden: my first birdhouse gourds, my first successful broccoli and my first full year of fairy gardening. It has been so nice to have you along to share it with me.

They are so impressive and look like fine company in those jaunty scarves! I would rather watch your gourds turn brown than watch Waiting for Godot I’m afraid! I went to a performance once starring a late, great English actor Pete Postlethwaite but my husband (then boyfriend) and I left in the interval. I knew he was the one for me with such confidence not to sit through something you are not enjoying out of politeness! I’m sure you’ll make great bird houses, can’t wait to see them:)
