Landscape designers call them “water features” and they can cost a pretty penny. Our water feature is a faux stone fountain, purchased 15 years ago for $79.
Moving water soothes the senses. It masks the uglier sounds of the suburbs like traffic or noisy neighbors. If your lucky, it attracts wildlife, stopping by for a drink.
Serenity
Even though we have an indoor water fountain for the cats, two of the four kitties prefer to drink from the outdoor fountain, green algae and all. Squirrels hop on and off on occasion and I’m pretty sure the visiting raccoon washed his little hands in the splash after turning our lawn into a muddy mess.
Our small and unremarkable water feature brings serenity to the garden. If you are lucky enough to live near the ocean or a lake, you’ll know exactly what I mean. If not, consider investing in a bird bath, a small fountain or your own creative version of water in motion.

Gardening Nirvana 
I’m in need of a water feature in my garden! I have a circular raised bed that is ready and waiting but the fountain we need to relocate is far too heavy for us to move… we’re thinking about plan B at the moment. I agree that water brings another welcome dimension to our lives x

I’ve seen kits that allow you to create your own. You purchase a black vinyl or plastic liner (at least I think that’s what they’re made off). You add a pump and then build the structure from rocks. It can be as formal or informal as you want it to be. What’s your plan B?

I would love to have a water feature… maybe in the fruit and flower garden, once that is established. Do you have frogs?

Oh how I wish we did. It’s very warm here, not as conducive to amphibians. We have lizards.

Hey, I don’t remember seeing this lovely in my email. I have a fountain in storage and can’t wait to use it again. It’s a young girl with an urn at a tap, I bought it when I worked at a local garden centre. Don’t be mad but, I’d love to see your little racoon rascal washing his (her) little hands in the garden. We don’t have them here and I’ve always thought they were adorable. I know they do make havoc in yards and garages, but dang they’re cute. 🙂

Why would I be mad!? I love all creatures, great and small, even when they are a nuisance. They are awful cute, but they can be temperamental too so you want to keep a safe distance. My mom and dad fostered a baby raccoon for a few years when they found its mother killed on the side of the road. They reintroduced it into the wild once it was old enough, but of course this all happened before we were born.
I can’t wait to see your charming fountain on display again.
